Global Trade Compliance Officer

Purpose of the position

 

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Global Trade Compliance Officer to lead and manage our global trade compliance program. This role is crucial to ensuring our company adheres to all international trade laws and regulations, minimizing risk, and promoting ethical and responsible business practices. The ideal candidate has a good understanding of export controls, trade sanctions and customs procedures, and security governance for controlled items. Experience in Navy business is an asset.


This position can be located at our offices in Hamburg (German), Gothenburg (Sweden), Kaarina (Finland), Gdańsk (Poland) or Sofia (Bulgaria).

Main tasks and responsibilities

 

  • Develop and Maintain a Robust Trade Compliance Program:

    • Create and implement a comprehensive program covering all aspects of international trade compliance (export controls, import/customs regulations, trade sanctions, and security of controlled items).

    • Conduct regular audits and risk assessments to proactively identify and address compliance vulnerabilities.

    • Stay up-to-date on evolving trade regulations and adapt the program accordingly.

    • Train employees on trade compliance policies and procedures.

 

  • Oversee Key Compliance Areas:

    • Export Controls: Ensure proper classification of products and technology, manage export licences, and oversee compliance with applicable export regulations.

    • Controlled Items Security: Establish and maintain a secure environment for handling controlled items, including physical security, access controls, and record-keeping

    • Sanctions: Maintain and develop our automated trade sanctions screening system, monitor its effectiveness, and keep it updated with the latest regulations. 

    • Import/Customs: Oversee import processes, ensure compliance with customs regulations, and manage customs documentation and procedures.

 

  • Provide Expert Guidance and Support to internal stakeholders

  • Ensure Continuous Improvement of trade compliance

 

What you’ll need to succeed

 

Education and Experience:

 

  • Minimum bachelor's degree in law, international business, or a related field.

  • 5 years of experience, or otherwise demonstrated sufficient experience in a trade compliance role, preferably in an international operating industrial company.

  • Knowledge of international trade laws and regulations, including ITAR, EAR, EU Dual-Use Regulation, U.S. and EU sanctions, and preferably customs regulations.

  • Experience with automated sanctions screening systems.

  • Experience with security protocols and best practices for handling controlled items.

 

Skills and Competencies:

 

  • Analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and effective communication.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.    

  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively in English.

 

An additional asset:

 

  • Professional certification in trade compliance (e.g., Certified Export Specialist).

  • Experience in the navy or defence industry.
