The R&D Software Development department is looking for a new summer trainee to join the HT Onboard development team. You would be able to start working in May 2023 or part-time even earlier.

 

After a successful training period there is a possibility to do your final thesis with us if that is something that would be of interest to you. 

 

The position is located in Tampere, Finland. The trainee period lasts from April to August, but exact duration can be agreed with some degree of flexibility. Hybrid working, i.e. partial remote work, is possible. 
 

Main tasks and responsibilities:

 

The software development department within Kalmar has a large software ecosystem spanning many different software languages, technologies and communication systems using protocols like TCP/IP but also newer layers on top like MQTT. In addition there are many component simulators in use to aid developers. You will be part of the Horizontal Transport Onboard team responsible for navigation and control of the AutoStrad using mainly C++  to communicate with the machine PLC, sensors, do data processing, and much more to perform real-life tasks in moving around and picking/placing containers in a shipping terminal. 

 

Tasks will be tailored depending on your experience, capabilities and interests. There are many exciting opportunities where you can contribute. You will help the team using simulated environments  testing the software components, participating in live testing of a full scale terminal software ecosystem (Kalmar One) in our backyard test field, further developing some of the internal tooling related to these components. 
 

What you’ll need to succeed:

 

  • MSc/ BSc studies, preferably 3rd year or more in suitable field like software engineering or automation engineering 
  • Genuine interest in software development applied to navigation and control of equipment at the application level
  • Experience and interest in application level C++ 
  • Any experience in Python and/or Haskell is an advantage
  • Familiarity with Linux environment for development
  • Good study record
  • Detail oriented and problem solving attitude
  • Excellent communication skills in English
