Purpose of the position
We are looking for a self-motivated, energetic team leader to join our organization. The ideal candidate should be located the Los Angeles, CA area (Pier 400, San Pedro, CA), have enhanced technical skills (mechanical, electrical and hydraulics) and leadership experience.
This position is responsible for providing maintenance & repair service to Kalmar brand container handling equipment at customer locations with a focus on electrical repair and diagnosis.
Candidate will also be responsible for assisting personnel in the field, with documentation, report of labor, work orders and inspections and act as a Kalmar Ambassador at the customer site.
Main tasks and responsibilities
- Lead Service Engineer duties include, but are not limited to, inspecting and installing equipment and new technologies, directing crews or workers on site, conducting research, and reporting on project status. Lead service Engineers make sure that everything works smoothly and engineering designs are being followed by the product support engineers.
- LSE will communicate with clients to determine needs and explain complex issues. This interaction is required daily. The LSE will conduct impromptu training/coaching sessions when the opportunity presents itself. Oftentimes, equipment will have an issue that the local union technicians need assistance with, so the LSE will communicate with the local Product support engineers for a solution. When this happens, we work together to find the root cause and a solution in real time. This level of support is critical to the growth of the port personnel. As we navigate the troubleshooting process, we cultivate a trusting work environment. This level of cohesiveness ultimately translates to a higher percentage of reliability from the equipment. As the equipment becomes increasingly more complex, the need for onsite support becomes a requirement.
- While supporting the local fleet of machines with the product support team, we assist other sites with a variety of machine specific issues. The equipment is not always the same Hybrid Shuttles that we service locally. Other types of equipment include, Automated Hybrid Straddle Carriers, Non Automated Electric Straddle Carriers, Using a remote monitoring software (Insight) to follow trends of equipment outages, helps to focus efforts with the local technicians. This in turn allows for a higher success rate of finding the root cause of the problem.
- As an Original Equipment Manufacturer, (OEM) employee, we troubleshoot repair and test equipment under warranty. During that process, research is conducted on systems that show signs of repeated failure and bring this information to our team for discussion. This also includes our product support team in Finland. This position is involved in the delivery and commissioning of new equipment locally and other sites within the U.S. This includes implementation of all upgrades and modifications of the new straddle carrier deliveries.
- An additional role in this position will be assisting Service Sales in any Customer communication regarding direct project or quoted service sales in the west coast region. This could be service opportunities for any port locations on the west coast. Overall, The LSE will work with the leadership at both sides to streamline communication and foster a working relationship that allows both companies to grow together. On a daily basis, The LSE will manage the union maintenance crew for the preventative maintenance and receive claims for the local sites for warrantied equipment, repair that equipment, train/coach local union technicians, and support the local product support team with any issues that may arise. All of these actions and admin reporting throughout a workweek are documented through our reporting system are monitored by the line level Manager and warranty clerk.
What you’ll need to succeed
Education:
- Technical Degree or minimum of 5 years’ experience in heavy industrial equipment maintenance
Experience:
- Leadership experience; experience leading a team of technicians/engineers
- PLC Programming certification and/or experience; Siemens preferred.
- Specific experience with Motors, Controls, PLC’s, hydraulics, steel work and/or rigging is helpful.
- Experience in commercial and/or large electronic equipment a plus
- Good judgement, initiative and experience to deal with multi-dimensional maintenance and repair work for complex equipment and systems
Competencies:
- Strong aptitude toward control system logic
- Theoretical and applied knowledge of pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical systems related to mobile equipment preferred
- Good organization skills
- Good communication skills
- Fluent in English both spoken and written
- Good problem solving skills
- Strong work ethic, dependability and initiative
Requirements:
- Valid Driver’s License
- Valid TWIC Card or ability to obtain Valid TWIC Card when hired
- Candidates must be able to work at elevated heights
- Ability to work independently
