Kalmar is looking for a Automation Engineer who will be providing services in defined engineering discipline to support engineering design, development, and project delivery and completion. The position will be based in Long Beach, California, USA and will be reporting to Manager, Automation Services.

Key accountabilities


  • To assist customers to use, and get maximum benefit from, their Automation technology by responding to, and resolving, issues raised by the customers within the time frames specified in Service Level Agreement (SLA). Channelling the customer feedback and improvement requirements back to the product management in order to develop the overall software platform product.
  • To respond (by phone, email, etc) to issues reported by customers, gather necessary evidence of the symptoms, provide a workaround to the issue where possible, perform root cause analysis to determine the resolution strategy, and initiate a root cause fix by other groups (such as software engineering) as necessary. 
  • Where a software fault has been reported, consult with product managers and/or software engineers to determine the gap (if any) between reported system behavior and as-designed system behavior and handle customer expectations of the resolution approach accordingly. Manage the fix of the software fault according to the time frames in the customer's SLA.
  • Participate in a roster of similar persons to provide after hours response capability for customers that need to report an urgent or high-impact issue.
  • To participate in, and contribute to, the implementation of Automation technology at customer sites by undertaking tasks as defined by the project requirements. Apart from meeting project objectives, a primary outcome of this activity is to gain knowledge of the technology and the customer’s operational environment for use in supporting the customer.

What you’ll need to succeed:


Ideally you have:


  • Competence and experience from complex robotics systems, software and interfaces 
  • Technical skills in PLC, server and network architectures 
  • Excellent troubleshooting and networking skills
  • Experience in ports and terminals 



  • M.Sc / B. Sc degree in Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Robotics



  • 2+ years of work experience in software engineering or automation integration and testing
  • OEM equipment installation, commissioning, customer handover
  • SCADA integration and historization 
  • Troubleshooting live and large integrated systems down to component level
  • Working on networks, LAN, WAN, VLAN, TCP/IP, VPN

Skills & Knowledge


  • Customer case management
  • Software defect management
  • Windows-based PC tools such as document writing, spreadsheets, slide presentations, database queries using SQL, system log recovery
  • Mechanical and/or electrical installation, commissioning, or maintenance in a heavy equipment or manufacturing context
  • PLC programming Siemens, Allen Bradly, Omron 
  • PLC communication networks 



  • Proactive and enthusiastic way of working

  • Good communication skills in English 
  • Can conceptualize a situation/event from verbal or written description
  • Thorough and comprehensive root cause analysis
  • Customer service ethic, tact, diplomacy, sensitivity
