Product Development Manager, Electrical Systems

Purpose of the position

Kalmar is seeking a full-time Product Development Manager, Electrical Systems for our Terminal Tractor Division Engineering Team at our headquarters in Ottawa, Kansas. In this role, you will be responsible for directing and coordinating the activities of multiple Electrical and Software Development Engineers.

 

Main tasks and responsibilities

Accountabilities:
●    Provide leadership and guidance to Development Engineers and Principle System Engineers in the areas of Electrical Engineering, Vehicle Software & Controls, Kalmar processes, project management, and professional development (individualized coaching, training and mentoring)
●    Plan resource requirements, inter-team assignments, analyze technology trends, human resource needs, and market requirements to plan and complete projects
●    Provide strategic direction for the design of new products, enhancement of existing designs, improved production techniques, and development of test procedures
●    Confer with management, operations, and product management staff to determine product feasibility, cost effectiveness, and customer requirements for new and existing products
●    Establish overall design goals to meet the requirements of the marketplace and establish procedures/design practices which result in high quality products with fast time to market
●    Monitor the latest components and technologies that may be of use in Kalmar products and monitor customers returns to understand field failure tendencies to improve the quality of new designs
●    Work with the operations facilities to improve communication, reduce the time to produce new designs, and improve first build quality
●    Assist with planning annual budget and participate in recruiting activities, interview, hire, train, and evaluate performance for the team
●    Interface and communicate directly with product management and other engineering functions to obtain customer insight or escalation contact on behalf of Development Engineering
●    Collaborate with Strategic Sourcing to coordinate and implement Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VA/VE) design activities

What you’ll need to succeed

Education:
●    Undergraduate degree in Electrical, Software, Electronics, or Controls Engineering required
●    Graduate degree in Engineering discipline preferred 

Experience:
●    7+ years in experience preferred
●    Good skills in ECAD systems, Zuken E3 experience preferred
●    Experience with Danfoss +1 GUIDE or CoDeSys development environments preferred
●    Experience in C, C++ or with other IDE’s a plus
●    Experience with Atlassian Jira, Confluence 

Competencies:
●    Good knowledge of Kalmar’s product lines, customer needs, and engineering and manufacturing processes/documentation
●    Broad technical knowledge and skills in various areas of Electrical, Software and Controls Engineering including analog, digital, RF, and/or DSP
●    Strong  aptitude toward control system logic, 7-layer OSI model, software development V model
●    Strong understanding of vehicle electrical system topologies
●    Strong understanding of CAN bus, Fieldbus, Isobus, and other control protocols
●    Understanding of safety rated controls development (ISO 26262, ISO 13849)
●    Detailed knowledge and experience with test equipment and software tools for electronics design, testing and documentation
●    Demonstrated theoretical and applied knowledge of pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical systems related to mobile equipment preferred
●    Demonstrated problem solving and root cause analysis skills
●    Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
●    Must be positive, detail oriented, organized, team oriented and a driven problem solver, multi-tasker, and self-starter with the ability to prioritize and lead in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment
●    Fluent in English both spoken and written
