Are you passionate about technology?  Do you know how to solve challenging problems?  Kalmar Solutions, is seeking a Development Engineer, Mechanics to be based in our global design center in Ottawa, KS, located just south of the Kansas City area.  The Mechanical Design Engineer will be involved in all aspects of the truck design and must have the capability of integrating components into truck chassis and cabins where the product systems include hydraulics, pneumatics, structures and powertrain. In this role you will be part of a global team and together.

Main tasks and responsibilities
  • Develop truck components and systems
  • Secure that components and systems meet specified technical customer demands, product safety, legislations requirements and internal demands for Terminal Tractor products (TT)
  • In consultation with Principal Systems Engineer (PSE) coordinate components and systems design between TT products.
  • In consultation with PSE respond on service, production and supplier issues
  • In consultation with responsible R&D Manager and PSE plan and perform own activities according to specified requirements and time schedule
  • To contribute for co-operation between TT R&D and Supply including both sourcing and MAU
  • Responsibility for regularly reporting to responsible R&D Manager and PSE regarding outcome and possible deviations
  • According to customer demands choose design, material and components
  • In consultation with responsible R&D Manager and PSE purchase component for test and evaluations
  • In consultation with responsible R&D Manager and PSE perform customer and supplier visits
  • In consultation with PSE initiate and order testing for verification and evaluation of a design
  • Responsible for the design of mechanical vehicle sub-systems and components
  • Be a technical resource for the overall product and application of Kalmar Terminal Tractors
  • Lead NPD, AE, PC and CE projects and assign related tasks to internal and external engineers and other personnel. Also, perform some of these tasks simultaneously
  • Will be required to work closely with other TT RDE personnel, TT Order Management, Project Managers, Sourcing, Production and Services groups worldwide
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
What you'll need to succeed:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering is required



  • A minimum of three (3+) years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in mobile equipment application
  • Work with a variety of mechanical system design tasks, working through system requirement generation and system interaction definition
  • Licensed PE or ability to obtain PE license preferred



  • Strong aptitude toward mechanical design
  • Strong background in working in a project based product development environment and process
  • Strong understanding of assembly processes and good understanding of manufacturing processes
  • Strong skills in 3D CAD systems, CATIA V5  experience preferred
  • Skilled in G suite preferred
  • Theoretical and applied knowledge of structural, pneumatic and hydraulic systems related to mobile equipment
  • Theoretical and applied knowledge of design for six sigma principles, lean principle, and scrum development methodologies
  • Good understanding of structural analysis and testing
  • Good organization skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Good problem solving skills
  • Fluent in English both spoken and written
