As pioneers and global leader, Hiab is ambitious to write forward our success story, inspiring and shaping our industry. The world in which we operate with our class-leading products, intelligent services and innovative digital solutions is constantly changing.

Together, we keep everyday life moving to build a better tomorrow

Hiab, a part of Cargotec, is looking for new talents to join its Autonomous Technologies team. The team performs state-of-the-art research, develops and integrates smart autonomous technologies for the next generation load handling products with considerations of productivity, safety, and eco-efficiency. The team extensively utilises science to overcome technical challenges for added value to our customers’ businesses. Our R&D includes all the aspects from conceptual  to final design, development, safety, prototyping, testing, verification, and validation. The team’s goal is to equip our products with reliable high-performance robotic solutions built to perform.

We are seeking a skilled Robotic Cognitive Control Engineer to join our Autonomous Technologies team. As a key contributor, you will design and implement control systems for heavy-duty mobile machines, especially focusing on mathematical modeling and nonlinear model-based control. In our view, heavy-duty mobile machines can be robotic mobile manipulators, and you will challenge your expertise in control and estimation theory, via model-based design, to improve the performance of our robots. Your expertise will ensure that our control systems can reliably handle the complex and dynamic environments in which our robots operate. You will need to be able to identify potential issues and develop solutions to overcome them, using your knowledge of control and estimation theory and your experience with programming for real-time embedded systems. In addition to your technical skills, you should have excellent problem-solving and communication skills, as well as a strong interest in working with complex real-world problems in cutting-edge strategic R&D and product development projects in the field of robotics and autonomous systems.

If you are a skilled Robotic Control Engineer with experience in system dynamics and a background in manipulators/mobile robotics, control theory, and model-based design, don't miss out on this great opportunity to shape the future of load-handling automation - join us.

Main tasks and responsibilities:

  • Develop model-based nonlinear control systems for heavy-duty manipulators and wheeled mobile robots for real-world applications
  • Solve system integration challenges for real-time embedded systems
  • Design and verify state machine systems for efficient operation, as per relevant standards and guidelines
  • Implement system behaviour control to optimise performance and safety
  • Develop health and ODD (Operational Design Domain) monitoring for safe operation
  • Collaborate with hardware and software teams for seamless integration and compliance
  • Implement V-model principles, including requirements development and testing
  • Stay updated on the latest robotics developments and apply them to our systems
  • Provide technical support and guidance to team members as needed.

What you'll need to succeed:

  • Postgraduate studies in Control, Automation, Robotics, Software, or Mechanical Engineering with solid accomplishments
  • Familiarity with robot kinematics, dynamics, estimation, and nonlinear control theory
  • Familiarity with instrumentation, and vehicle communication networks
  • Proficiency in Matlab/Simulink and preferably CodeGeneration
  • Experience with rapid prototyping and V&V toolchains is a plus
  • Knowledge of real-time embedded processor or PLC programming (C/C++, CodeSys, QNX)
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • Passion for working on complex real-world problems in cutting-edge robotics R&D projects
  • Proficiency in verbal and written English.

You will be part of

We offer you a position in a global organisation where you are challenged with interesting and diverse tasks. These tasks will provide a great opportunity for you to grow professionally.
