Autonomous Systems Manager

Hiab is seeking an experienced and highly motivated senior robotics and autonomous systems expert to join our expanding team of experts within the Autonomous Technologies team. This role offers the opportunity to serve as a primary liaison between team members and key external stakeholders, prioritizing transparent communication and seamless coordination of cross-disciplinary research and technology development, with a strong touch base to business and customer needs.


The primary objective of this position is to coordinate our research and development work streams, to make sure that they follow scientific principles and state-of-the-art technology primarily focused on AI & robotics and the advancement of new product innovations. This entails meticulous management of technical and resource plans, aligning team effort and tasks with our strategic roadmap for both current and future products and services. Our overarching goal is to enhance customer safety, sustainability, and productivity through the implementation of more intelligent load-handling solutions. We emphasize a culture of transparency and collaboration to foster a positive team dynamic, leveraging existing talent efficiently and promoting innovation. In this role, you will be consistently challenged with emerging technological advancements and novel subject matter.


As an accomplished Autonomous Systems Manager, your role will involve close collaboration with diverse teams, team members, and external stakeholders, encompassing research institutions, public funding entities, and other pertinent parties. Your adeptness in leveraging past experiences with adaptability and an open mind will be instrumental in fostering teamwork and aligning organizational objectives with daily team progress. Your established international network of experts will be invaluable in external collaborations.


Your daily responsibilities will encompass a comprehensive range of robotic topics, including adherence to standards, established guidelines, stringent verification and validation (V&V) processes, and impactful
reporting.

 

This role may also involve project planning, proposal writing, and oversight/reporting of publicly funded projects, making prior experience with national and EU funding mechanisms, research regulation and reporting protocols highly advantageous.

 

Main tasks and responsibilities:

 

  • Facilitate technical coordination within the team mostly related to the robotics, AI, and autonomous systems domain and relevant applications
  • Task management and technical reporting in accordance with the team and company protocols
  • Planning, cost allocation and progress reporting of publicly funded projects, which may require collaboration with HR and Finance departments
  • Contribute to resource allocation and budgetary planning efforts
  • Ensure seamless synchronization and technical coordination between internal development work streams and external collaborations
  • Develop standardized workflows and reports to deliver concise and impactful communications regarding project status, challenges, risks, and achievements to key stakeholders
  • Development, ownership and monitoring of technical key performance indices where it comes to technology readiness level of research and development outcomes.

 

What you'll need to succeed:

 

  • Demonstrated success in one or more relevant areas, such as AI, robotics, perception, control, probabilistic systems, automotive, or software engineering
  • Proven track record of effective coordination or pivotal roles in robotics, AI, or software domain
  • Proven track record from proposal to granted large-scale publically funded projects (national, EU)
  • Experience in acting as Principal Investigator is considered a plus
  • Ability to maintain a strategic perspective while delivering clear, well-structured, and concise communications tailored to diverse audiences
  • Experience in real-world robotics, estimation, or control solutions is advantageous
  • Familiarity with heavy-duty machinery or trucks is beneficial
  • Proficiency in software engineering practices and familiarity with systems engineering methods, such as V-Model practices, is advantageous
  • Strong interest in R&D and new product development tasks, with a keen focus on safety and standard-based development processes (e.g. ISO 26262, ISO 21448, ISO 13849 and Machinery Regulation)
  • Familiarity with embedded systems programming, as well as Matlab and Simulink, is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability or enthusiasm for serving as a first point of contact for team/partner/customer interactions in a transparent manner
  • Familiarity with Matlab/Simulink and Code Generation is a plus
  • Analytical and problem-solving mindset
  • Highly proficient in both verbal and written English; proficiency in verbal and written Finnish is an asset.
