Quality Engineer

Purpose of the position
Will work directly with customers, Moffett Engineering, Operations and Supplier Quality resources to help resolve process and product quality problems and assists same in designing and implementing corrective actions and process improvements in response to those problems; supports the Waltco Quality Manager in managing, maintaining and improving the Waltco Quality Management System; creates and implements procedures, work instructions and processes as are determined necessary in order for Waltco to successfully meet the requirements of ISO 9001 and any applicable customer requirements.
Primary job functions typically will require the exercising of independent judgement and decision making. Will apply their knowledge and understanding of quality management systems, six sigma and lean manufacturing concepts, practices and principles to develop solutions to problems and opportunities for improvement.
Main tasks and responsibilities
• Stay compliant with all established company safety procedures, standards and requirements and utilize the appropriate safety equipment, PPE.
• Must be cognizant and extremely aware of the people and activities occurring around them and over them as they perform their inspection and test activities.
• Participates in safety audit and improvement teams.
• Notifies management when they notice or witness an unsafe or potentially unsafe act, condition or an accident.
• Assists Quality Manager in:
• the design, development and implementation of the processes, procedures and work instructions necessary for Waltco’s quality management system to meet the requirements of ISO 9001 and maintain successful registration to the technical standard.
• supporting other departments in their development and implementation of processes necessary for the effectiveness of the Waltco quality management system in meeting requirements.
• developing and performing the training necessary to implement new or revised quality management system processes, procedures or work instructions.
• providing active, on-going and close quality system support by working closely with Waltco Sales, Engineering and Operations
• Leads, manages and participates in the internal audit program of the Waltco quality management systems, including the training of new internal auditors.
• Maintains measurement and inspection equipment and assembly fixture calibration program
• Manages root cause analysis and corrective action responses on non-warranty customer quality issues and rejections. Maintains documentation, insures compliance to time line and validates effectiveness of countermeasures. Supports the internal teams assigned to perform this root cause analysis and corrective action to ensure the proper tools and methods are used and valid results are achieved.
• Actively drives and supports key quality management system performance metrics. Investigates variances from planned targets.
• Reads and interprets Waltco engineering drawings, schematics, product specifications, and other process requirements for the purpose of assessing component parts, sub-assemblies and finished lift gates conformance to requirements.
• When necessary, performs 1st article and PPAP visual and mechanical inspection on new part numbers or parts from new suppliers.
• Notifies, communicates and confers with Supervisors, Team Leads, Assemblers, Peers, Engineers and other internal operations and quality leadership to report findings of nonconformance to product or process requirements, product problems and to assist in determining what next steps or actions must be taken.
• Documents their findings of product nonconformance on appropriate documentation.
• Supports shop floor safety, quality and improvement initiatives
• Makes recommendations for process change and improvements including corrective and preventive action needed involving internal processes and/or lift gate component parts and sub-assemblies.
• Participates in 5 WHY Gemba problem-solving teams conducting root cause analysis on internal non conformances.
• Participates in assembly process audits and outgoing product audits
• Participates in the inspection and failure analysis of returned nonconforming parts and/or customer returned material.
• Uses a computer to document results of inspections, audits, non conformances and to communicate via email and to locate, find and use the necessary procedures, work instructions, forms and drawings needed to successfully perform their duties.
• Assists in maintaining a healthy and safe work environment by following all 5S and workplace organization and safety requirements.
• May travel to customers in response to product quality problems.
What you’ll need to succeed
• QUALIFICATIONS & TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED:
• Minimum 7-10 years’ experience in the quality function
• Minimum 5 years as a Quality Engineer in either an ISO 900, AS or TS 16949 high volume manufacturing or assembly work environment. Should have a solid understanding of quality management systems, Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma and Process Approach to manufacturing.
• Should be able to effectively use basic mechanical measuring and inspection equipment such as micrometers, calipers, levels, square, protractors, etc. Must be able to use and accurately read a tape measure down to 1/32”.
• Must be able to read and comprehend what they have read. Must be able to follow written work instructions.
• Must be able to write clearly so others can clearly comprehend what has been written.
• Must be able to read and interpret product drawings, prints and technical specifications.
• Must be proficient with basic math skills, adding, subtraction, multiplication, division. Work in metric a plus.
• Must be able to understand fractions. Must be able to add or subtract fractions.
• Must be able to verbally communicate clearly and concisely to others and use the correct terminology when communicating a technical, product or process issue. Provides guidance and expert advice to management and other groups on product and process technical and process related topics.

• Should be able to work on their own and under limited direct supervision

• EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
• College graduate in mechanical engineering or industrial engineering preferred. At a minimum, a high school diploma or equivalent required.
• Prior metal working or assembly background and experience required.
• Experience in product inspection required. CQE preferred
• Experience in auditing highly preferred but not required. CQA preferred
• LANGUAGE and COMPUTER SKILLS:
• English. Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish a plus.
• Proficiency in using Microsoft Office (MS Word and MS Excel) and email would be a plus. Google Suite experience a plus.
• REASONING ABILITY:
• Ability to apply problem-solving and root cause analysis to a variety of situations.
• CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
• None required at this time but Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, CQE and CQA highly valued.
• PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
• The employee should exhibit the ability to stand for extended periods of time, walk extensively, and sit, kneel, squat, grasp and lift up to 40 pounds without assistance while performing their tasks and duties.
• 20/20 eye sight with or without glasses.
• Visual color discrimination. Must be able to differentiate colors correctly.
