R&D Technician

Provide technical, hands-on shop floor support for all R&D activities.  Builds and tests new liftgate designs.



Includes the following. Other duties may be assigned.


  • Assembly and mounting of standard or prototype liftgates.
  • Assist in tests and experiments which may require modifications in test set-ups or procedures, selecting, setting up, and operating standard test equipment and recording test data.
  • Utilize a computer to create lab reports and execute drafting tasks.
  •  Assist in troubleshooting and correcting malfunctions at both in-house and customer locations. Some travel may be required.
  • Maintain engineering test areas and equipment.
  • Perform assignments that are not completely standardized or prescribed.
  • Perform typical duties such as constructing components, sub-units, or adaptions of standard equipment.

  • Ability to install liftgates per installation manual instructions and configure provided test equipment and obtain test data as prescribed in provided R&D test procedures; prepared by R&D engineers.
  • Ability to read and understand dimensional drawings in order to fabricate components and fixtures requiring skills in steel fabrication: layout, cutting, welding, grinding, drilling, milling.  Test fixture and apparatus design capability is a plus.
  • Ability to work with a computer to complete tasks.  Experience in spreadsheets, CAD, or SolidWorks is a plus.
  • Experience in the use of test equipment and precision measuring devices.  Hydraulic equipment maintenance experience is a plus.
  • Basic hydraulic and electrical knowledge with ability to read and understand schematic drawings.
  • Ability to operate overhead cranes, fork trucks, fabrication machine tools, power tools, and hand tools.  Master mechanic skills are preferred.  Prior training and/or certification is a plus.
  • Ability to perform tasks with minimal supervision.




High school diploma with additional training or minimum 5 years work experience in basic engineering, manufacturing, and testing fundamentals.  Experience with Waltco liftgates assembly and troubleshooting is a plus.



Effective verbal and written communication essential.  Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where project scope change is the norm.



Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts to support dimensional drawing comprehension and component fabrication. 



Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.  Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.)
