Chief Software Engineer, Digital Solutions Hub

We build and expand our digital solutions to offer a great customer experience and more efficient business processes. Digital Solutions Hub in Tampere, Finland, will focus on accelerating the launch of new digital and data-driven services in all Cargotec business areas, Kalmar, Hiab and MacGregor. The hub will provide expertise and robust processes for the business areas and business lines to plan, design and build new digitally enabled services and products. The new digital offering will be developed using modern software development tools and methods in a systematic and focused way by a dedicated development team together with the business lines’ product managers, providing a fast track to business lines to create new revenue streams utilising opportunities enabled by digitalisation. 

We are looking for Chief Software Engineer, Digital Solutions Hub to join Cargotec Corporate business.

The position holder will report to Tommi Pettersson, VP Digital Solutions Hub.  The position will be based at Cargotec office in Tampere.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

As Chief Software Engineer you will be the the owner of the software development, testing resources and process. In one of the main scopes of your responsibilities will be to ensure that software development and testing activities are done within budget and schedule. We expect you to maintain and report long-term view on resource and competence needs, and actively develop team to fulfill future requirements. 
As a key member of Digital Solutions hub management, you will actively participate in and contribute to unit’s strategy development and implementation.  The main areas of responsibilities within the job will be:

  • Advising and collaborating with business areas and business lines as SW expert
  • Advise on different solutions available to solve the problem
  • Guide development needs to match common goals
  • Educate business line stakeholders about SW development process agile development 
  • Resource and competence development:
    • Based on strategy, develop and maintain SW competencies and resource availability
    • Report systematically SW development activities and progress of those
    • Allocate SW development and testing resources to based on the Delivery Owner and Product Manager needs
  • Cooperation with business lines, customer projects and new product development projects:
    • Actively plan resource and competence mid and long-term usage
    • Agree priorities and work together with others to solve possible issues on prioritisations
  • Subcontractor network:
    • Maintain and develop subcontracting network based on Automation roadmap
    • Ensure cost-efficient usage of sub-contractors
    • Improve quality of sub-contractors
  • Act as a line manager to team members: 
    • Lead team to reach goals
    • Enable team performance through regular monitoring and feedback 
    • Ensure that requests and inquiries are met efficiently in a timely and quality manner
    • Make sure strategy (incl. vision, mission and values) and goals are implemented, understood and shared
  • Customer (internal and external) interaction
  • Having good understanding on the customer’s needs and Cargotec SW strategy in order to make decisions on the technical solutions serving the customers
  • Create process to provide full visibility to the customer on progress of development and plans.

What you’ll need to succeed:

Ideally you have:

  • M.Sc (eng), software engineering and minimum 8 years of work experience in a suitable role
  • Customer interface experience
  • Experience in SW development methods and tools
  • Experience in manufacturing or logistics industry software development is an asset 
  • Good understanding of global business environment and its requirements
  • Skills to enable a collaborative agenda and drive mutual success across organizations
  • Ability to take personal ownership for developing people, provide support in performance and reinforcing roles
  • Ability to build win-win partnerships with internal and external customers 
  • Skills to establish collaborative network with software developers, testers, UX/UI designers, product managers and other internal stakeholders
  • Excellent communication, interaction, influencing and team skills with the ability to work efficiently with wide networks
  • Adaptiveness to different (non-technical) audiences (from CxO to engineering level)
  • Deep understanding of software development
  • Passion to grow customer process understanding in cargo handling industry
  • Fluency in English is essential, other languages being an asset.
