Chief Software Architect, Digital Solutions Hub

Digital Solutions Hub in Tampere, Finland, will focus on accelerating the launch of new digital and data-driven services in all Cargotec business areas, Kalmar, Hiab and MacGregor. The hub will provide expertise and robust processes for the business areas and business lines to plan, design and build new digitally enabled services and products. The new digital offering will be developed using modern software development tools and methods in a systematic and focused way by a dedicated development team together with the business lines’ product managers, providing a fast track to business lines to create new revenue streams utilising opportunities enabled by digitalisation. 

We are looking for Chief Software Architect, Digital Solutions Hub to join Cargotec Corporate business.

The position holder will report to Tommi Pettersson, VP Digital Solutions Hub.  The position will be based at Cargotec office in Tampere.


Main tasks and responsibilities

In your role as Chief Software Architect you will direct the end-to-end architecture for Cargotec IoT system, collaborating with relevant stakeholders and development teams to define functional and non-functional requirements as well as ensuring that the architecture fulfills the requirements. You will be responsible for developing high-level product specifications with attention to system integration and feasibility. You will define consistent, scalable, re-usable and cost effective software architecture utilizing suitable technologies and methods.  We expect you to have a solid background in software development, ability to contribute to system implementation, readiness to provide technical guidance and coach the developers and engineers. 

  • As a key member of Cargotec Software Competence Centre, you will actively participate in and contribute to unit’s Strategy development and implementation. The main areas of responsibilities within the job will be:
  • Architectural evolution of the end-to-end system starting from requirements to the product launch.
  • Collaborating with business areas, development teams and other stakeholders to determine the best end-to-end architecture. 
  • Communicating the resulting architecture with concepts and implementation guidelines to development teams.
  • Defining clear interfaces between development teams allowing teams to operate independently.
  • System release management together with Lead DevOps Engineer. 
  • System releases and their content planning. This typically requires coordinating various system component releases from multiple development teams.
  • Overseeing progress of development teams to ensure consistency with initial design.
  • Ensuring software meets all non-functional requirements of quality, security, modifiability, extensibility, cost, etc.
  • Advising and collaborating with business areas and business lines as SW expert
  • Advise on different solutions available to solve the problem
  • Guide development needs to match common goals
  • Vision, roadmap and plan for SW architecture on Cargotec digital products
  • SW solution training for business lines software development, product management and other stakeholders
  • Subcontractor network:
  • Maintain and develop subcontracting network based on agreed roadmap
  • Ensure cost-efficient usage of sub-contractors
  • Improve quality of sub-contractors.

What you’ll need to succeed:

Ideally you have:

  • M.Sc (eng), software engineering and minimum 8 years of work experience as an architect for a cloud system, preferably for an IoT system
  • Several years of software development experience with languages such as Python, JavaScript or Java. 
  • Excellent knowledge of software and application design and architecture including knowledge of UML and other modeling methods
  • Significant knowledge of AWS technologies, e.g. AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate level or corresponding work experience. Key AWS technologies include EC2, IAM, Cognito, Kinesis, Lambda, Glue, ECS, Fargate, DynamoDB, RDS, S3, CloudWatch, CloudTrail
  • Significant familiarity with connected embedded systems and Linux-based OSs. Development experience with embedded devices is appreciated
  • Familiarity with application development technologies, such as node.js, Tomcat, HTML5 and JavaScript frameworks, is appreciated
  • Customer interface experience
  • Ability to gain broad and deep technical knowledge about the end-to-end IoT system including gateway software, cloud architecture and front-end
  • Having solution driven mindset, the ability to find the most suitable solutions for technical issues in gateway/cloud/frontend/analytics areas by considering the system as a whole. Drive the solutions  to be implemented in gateway/cloud/frontend/analytics teams.
  • Understanding the data flowing through the system and the effects of data quality to the system
  • Skills to enable a collaborative agenda with software developers, architects, product managers, UX/UI designers, other internal stakeholders and customers
  • Excellent communication, interaction, influencing and team skills with the ability to work efficiently with wide networks
  • Readiness to travel approximately 20-40 days per year
  • Passion to grow customer process understanding in logistics industry
  • Fluency in English is essential, other languages being an asset.
